She's a Boy I Knew
Gwen Haworth / Canada 2008 / 70 min / Beta
Our Shared Story She's a Boy I Knew is in many ways a remarkable documentary about a transgendered woman: instead of focusing on the main character Gwen Haworth, the film highlights her family, friends and spouse, all of whom reveal their thoughts on being part of a loved ones gender-reassignment process. With this film Haworth joins the few trans-people who have had the opportunity to direct a feature length film. This documentary is a warmhearted look at one person’s change, and how that change resonates around her. Because of its approach, it has been termed as an auto-ethnography. While Haworth lets her interviewees’ uncertainty, grief and exasperation show, in the end devotion and love carry even through the most difficult times. Vancouver-born Gwen Haworth has produced the film mainly with her own
money. Her energy and life story are empowering to watch, and the documentary
makes us hope to see more stories of transgendered people—told
by themselves. WITH SHORT FILMS: The Perfect Man This University diploma work is a documentary about a 21-year-old trans man, who awaits the final surgery. But all is not going according to plan. Casting Pearls Hollywood isn’t particularly kind for a trans woman looking for acting work. by Marjo Pipinen |
