Men putting it out there
Mr. L.A. Leather competition is held yearly in Los Angeles. This documentary
follows the nine finalists from 2003 from bar competitions to the city's
final showdown.
The finale consists of three costume rounds: jock strap, leather and festive
gear (which is also mostly leather) in addition to a 90 second speech,
during which the competitors explain how they will advance the visibility
of the leather community, if they win. This contest isn't about looks.
It's about who looks best in leather and finding the right spokesperson,
role model and sex object for the leather community.
Mr. Leather combines documentary with the Idols format. While most of
the documentary is focused on the world of leather, some snapshots from
everyday life including partners, pets and professions (among those a rodeo
cowboy and a cop) are shown.
The backstage is not forgotten and the documentary includes flashes from
the fetishes of the leather world. The documentary highlights the marginality
of the leather culture and its position in the gay culture as a whole,
plus the predominant whiteness of it - through the lone black participant.
