Screenwriter-director Angela Robinson, whose resume includes screenplays for the hit TV series The
L Word, introduces us to the amazing world of plaid-skirted secret agents called D.E.B.S. Amy is the artistic girl-next-door, Max a fierce crime-fighter with anger management issues, the hot Dominique keeps it cool while the intellectually challenged Janet just tries to keep up with the rest of the team.
As their first mission, the team has to catch the most dangerous woman in the crime world, the vicious jewel thief Lucy Diamond. The job proves more difficult than expected, when frisky Amy falls in love with the arch enemy. The solidarity of D.E.B.S. and the success of their mission are at stake, but no challenge is too big for these girls!
D.E.B.S. is a wonderfully cast film with sparkling and spot-on funny dialogue. Especially Jordana
Brewster (The
Fast and the Furious) has the charm of the young Demi
Moore as the bad gal Lucy Diamond who struggles not only with law enforcement, but in the human relations department as well.
You don’t want to miss this kick-ass film!
Lucy: [on an awkward first date] So, you're an assassin.
Ninotchka:
Da.
Lucy: How's that work?
Ninotchka: It's mostly freelance.
"The acting is solid overall, and all of the characters bring something unique to the story. Max, Janet, and especially Dominique serve primarily to support the Lucy-Amy storyline, but they are interesting enough characters that you can't help hoping for a sequel to see more of them.
This film ultimately succeeds because it can be different things to different viewers: to lesbian and bisexual viewers, a lesbian love story in teen-movie clothing; to straight teen and young adult viewers, a funny teen movie with a twist.
D.E.B.S. won't win any Oscars, but it doesn't need to--it's a funny, well-written, entertaining film, and one that just might do on the big screen what The L Word has done on TV: destigmatize lesbianism, and show the world that cinematic lesbian relationships can be just as much fun as
heterosexual ones."
