My Helsinki

My Helsinki

documentary, Finland 2004, 29 min

What is Helsinki like? Welcoming and strange. Always and never changing. Safe and dangerous. Liberal and prejudiced. Big and small. Near and far. My Helsinki is a documentary about Helsinki, a city full of different faces. It is also a story about what it is like to be young and gay and to live in the fast-growing capital of Finland in the early 21st century.

Elina has lived in Helsinki her entire life and Kimmo moved there from the small northern town of Rovaniemi about six months ago. In the documentary they talk about the gay culture in Helsinki, the flow of gay people from the countryside and smaller cities to big cities, matters of appearance and identity, the attitudes of other people, and other things that many young people are contemplating.
