Directors comment

The genesis of Do I Love You? came from wondering about why am I a lesbian? Beyond all the books and theories of other people - I wanted to know what I felt about it and what my concerns were. Instead of starting out with a completed script, I began with dialogues which explored aspects of my investigation. These dialogues were the starting point of the film. Actors were then assigned scenes - sometimes in a haphazard way – depending on who was available. I was also part of the troupe of actors - I'm very interested in the first person film where writer/director performs her own words.

The filming had begun and I wasn't sure what the end result would be – I wanted to leave that for the edit. I did know that I wanted to make a film that represented a series of notes and essays - rather than a full blown narrative. I like the essay form as a structure and I wanted to use that idea to make a feature.
This feature film is totally guerrilla in that we worked on the hoof, smiling at bus conductors, security guards, simply hoping for the best..There was immense good will - we were a small band of one to two crew at at time, a few actors, a few sandwiches and a few bits of script that held us together.

Finally in the edit, the story was written - the film weaves between relationships, amplifying similar or contrasting themes and experiences. I realized here that the quest underlying the flm was a universal one - not limited to any one particular human brand. My aim was for a barrage of ideas and events to come tumbling at the audience. A philosophical discourse on the notion of living life.
